Life Til Metal - CD Gallery - Holy Soldier Holy Soldier Holy
Soldier started off as a melodic heavy metal from Los Angeles, CA in
the mid-80's.. Several other known musicians, including Larry Farkas
of Vengeance Rising have been a part of the band. The band has had
several vocalists, but Steven Patrick recorded the band's first two
albums, although several tours had Eric Wayne filling in for Steven.
Holy Solider were the first heavy metal band to ever be signed by
Word Records. After two great metal albums, the band was dropped
from Word, and apparently broke up for a short time. They eventually
reformed with Eric Wayne as their full time vocalist and recorded a
third album called "Promise Man" that was a total change in style.

Life 'til Metal - CD Gallery - Deliverance In the late 80's
Deliverance started out in southern California as a speed metal
band. Their introduction to the world was on the infamous
"California Metal" compilation. By the mid 90's Deliverance's two
main men, Jimmy Brown and George Ochoa, were fighting over what
direction the band should take. The decision made was for George to
leave, thus leaving Jimmy to take the band into more of a
progressive, melodic, almost gothic metal direction. George Ochoa,
who was also the former guitarist for Recon, produced for, and
toured with Vengeance Rising for a while as well as played guitar
and produced Mortification's "Primitive Rhythm Machine" before
disappearing into obscurity. Deliverance continued on with a
revolving lineup that at one time or another would include members
of Recon and Betrayal. The band broke up for a while then reformed
in 2001 and released "Assimilation". Deliverance (Intense) 1989 1.

permission. In 1988 when this came out, there weren't very many
metal bands with a Christian message like Sacred Warrior, except for
Stryper and Bloodgood. I was stoked to get this heavily Metal
Church/Queensryche influenced disc. Actually this is one of the
first CDs I bought and I found it used in a secular CD store with a
hand written sticker that said " very tight power metal band!
Excellent!" Had to pick that one up. The clerk told me the guitarist
was a shredder and the vocalist was similar to Geoff Tate. The music
lived up to what the store said about it, but in comparison to their
next three discs, this one doesn't hold up. Some of the lyrics are a

Life 'til Metal - CD Gallery - David Zaffiro David Zaffiro David
Zaffiro is the former guitarist for Bloodgood and besides putting
out a few solo albums he has produced for several bands including
Holy Soldier and Broken Silence. David Zaffiro - The Other Side
(Alarma) 1989 1. "Stay" (4:00) 2. "I See Red" (3:22) 3. "Where Are

"Last Chance Believer" (4:28) 10. "Ashes to Ashes" (5:24) "The Other
Side" indeed does show another side of guitarist David Zaffiro.
David Zaffiro completely abandoned the metallica Bloodgood sound on
this, his first solo disc, for a more melodic, hard rock sound. At
points I wouldn't even call this hard rock, as songs like "Spirit Of
the Lord" are very personal, intimate, melancholy numbers. However,
this format does allow David to add more flash in the guitar work
from time to time, something that he did only sparingly with
Bloodgood. I must confess, I was somewhat disappointed by this album
when I first bought it upon it's release in 1989, but have grown to

Life 'til Metal - CD Gallery - Whitecross W H I T E C R O S S
Whitecross formed in Chicago in 1986, releasing their self-titled
heavy metal EP. Regular line-up changes plagued the group virtually
from its inception, but the duo of vocalist Scott Wenzel and
guitarist Rex Carroll remained constant until 1993 when Rex Carroll
split to form King James with two ex-Stryper members. After Rex
left, Whitecross continued with just Scott Wenzel, but without Rex
it wasn't Whitecross! Whitecross (Pure Metal) 1987 1. "Who Will You

"All I Need" (4:10) 9. "Nagasake" [instrumental] (1:47) 10. "Signs
of the End" (3:59) Whitecross' debut was a blast in 1987. Back then
I was a new Christian and there weren't a whole lot of Christian
bands, save for Bloodgood and Stryper. Whitecross were a bit more
raw sounding than either of those bands, taking on a sound not
unlike the first Ratt album. This is especially true of vocalist
Scott Wenzel whose raspy... No

(4:43) 10. "Black Snake" (2:56) Bloodgood 1986 With the exception of
the short, corny accapella opening, Bloodgood's self titled album is
a great metal disc. I was a new Christian when this disc came out
and was stoked to find a real metal band with Christian based lyrics
at the time. With the exception of Saint and Stryper there wasn't a
whole lot of quality Christian metal in the early and mid-80's.
However, with or without the lyrics, Bloodgood are still a powerful
metal band and good song writers. Les Carlsen's raspy, high ptiched
howl is incredible and one of the defining factors of the band. The
majority of this disc is good mid-paced 80's heavy metal (Some would
define it as power metal, but at the time, it was just heavy metal.)
However, Bloodgood offers a bit of diversity with tracks... No
Life 'til Metal - CD Gallery - Vengeance Rising The original
Vengeance lineup formed in 1986 in South Bay, CA and was made-up of
Doug Thieme, Roger Dale Martin, Glen Mancaruso, Mike Betts (Neon
Cross) and a girl singer named Sharon. The name of the band right up
to their first gig was Sacrifice. Sacrifice was to perform their
first gig with Barren Cross, Malacia and Neon Cross, but the name
was changed to Vengeance a week before the gig. Glenn Rogers
(Deliverance), who wrote much of the material on the band's first
album came in later in 1986. In 1987 Pastor Bob Beeman brought
together singer Roger Martinez and Vengeance. Guitarist Larry Farkas
would replace Glenn Rogers well before their first album would be
recorded. The band was a Christian variation on the emerging thrash
metal scene. They were one of the best thrash bands to come out of
the Sanctuary Christian metal movement of the mid-80's. Shortly
after their first album was released, they had a problem over the
rights to the name as another band owned the rights to record under
the name, but not to tour under it. They decided to change their
name to Vengeance Rising to avoid confusion. Only one thousand
copies of their first album were pressed to CD without the word...

Craig Troy photo by Steve Craig In 1983 Dale and Troy Thompson
started a heavy metal band named Matrix in Louisville, Kentucky.
Eventually, before signing their first record contract, the name was
changed to Bride. They were one of the best bands in the genre for a
long time. Dale's unique screech gave the band and edge and a very
unique sound. Dale even sang for Stryper for a show after Michael
Sweet quite the band following the release of "Can't Stop the Rock."
At the time, however, Bride were gaining popularity rapidly so Dale
decided not to join Stryper but to stay with the band he formed.
Unfortunately, brother Dale and Troy Thompson have taken the band
through every trend to come through, even releasing a CD of rapcore.
Fortunately in 2003 Bride decided to listen to their fans and
started writing music in the style of their more popular groove
metal works. Bride - Show No Mercy (M8) 1986/2001 1. "Evil that Men

- Soldiers of the Light (independent) 2003 1. "Soldiers of the
Light" (3:36) 2. "The Cross" (5:04) 3. "God's Love Still Stand"
(2:12) After listening to this demo CD for the first time, I had to
go back and double check the copyright date on the back. I mean,
this disc was released in 2003, but is a total throwback to late
'80s/early 90's Christian heavy metal when Saint and Messiah Prophet
were ruling the scene. OK, perhaps it's not quite that nostalgic,
but certainly the attitude and the lyrical direction is that of the
metal missionaries of that time period. The music is straight
forward heavy metal with a groove. Unlike many of the more modern
'hard music' bands, The Cross aren't afraid to find a groove and
ride it. That is not to say the music is boring. There are plenty of
riff changes, breaks, etc. in the songs to keep them interesting. At
the same time, however, the repetitiveness within the songs make for
a more memorable listen. Vocalist Robert Ronning has a mid range,
clean style. Personally I would have liked to have heard a bit more
variety and aggression in the vocal, and perhaps a good scream or
two, but at the same... No

"Incarcerated" (5:38) 7. "Ruins of the Old" (5:00) 8. "The Lost"
(4:57) 9. "Freedom Slave" (4:03) Wedged somewhere between thrash and
death metal, I put this excellent disc in the same school as Death
or perhaps Believer. Loads of chuncky riffs and high, shrill vocals
that parallel those heard on discs like Death's "Sound of
Pereserverance." The music itself is tight, technical and actually
has some memorable hooks, something uncommon for death metal. What
works even more for this band is that they vary the speed. Besides
the usual warp speed riffing, there are also lots of slow to
mid-tempo rhythms to keep the mix interesting. I think this is what
makes and breaks some albums. Speed is good, but if overused, tends
to get boring. This particular disc is out of print and highly
sought after on trade boards. Sorry Ralf, won't trade this one.

Christian heavy metal band that formed in the late 80's. They were
signed to Pakaderm & A&M Records, released two cds, both produced by

was guitarist Greg Bishop. In 2001 a disc of unreleased demo tracks

When this disc came out, X-Sinner were immediately labeled an AC/DC
clone. While the similarities are there and the band obviously was
inspired by their sound, they have just as much in common with the
likes of Cinderella's "Night Songs" Krokus' "Headhunter" and Def
Leppard's "High & Dry." The biggest similarity is in the vocals.
Unlike most AC/DC inspired bands who seem to have a Bon Scott clone,
Robbins goes for the more aggressive Brian Johnson sound. These...

by Steve Craig NYC technical thrash metal quartet formed in 1987 by
drummer Joey Daub and guitarist/vocalist Kurt Bachman. I discovered
these guys shortly after selling all my vinyl in 1989. I walked into
a Christian store with a load of money from the records I had just
sold and bought five new Christian metal cds. Believer's "Extraction
from Mortality" was one of the discs I held in my hand. When I got
home and popped it in my cd player, I was blown away. I had to go
back and read the lyrics to make sure it was really Christian, as
the music was as intense, if not more so, than anything I had been
listening to before. Believer - Extraction from Mortality (R.E.X.)
